TORIS Database
for the Appalachian Region
The original TORIS database for the Appalachian Basin was assembled by the Appalachian Oil and Natural Gas Research Consortium whose members were drawn from the various State Geological Surveys within the Basin. Data were submitted to the National Petroleum Technology Office (NPTO) formerly located in Bartlesville, OK in November, 1995. The database was constructed in a special "card-image" format designed to be read and analyzed by software written by NPTO. However, in that format, the TORIS database was difficult to use and could not readily be accessed with any commercially available word processing or spreadsheet programs. In early 2005, the database, which had previously been available for public download from the NPTO website, was removed when NPTO ceased to function as an independent agency following reorganization and restructuring within the U. S. Department of Energy. A TORIS database in a "modified" Excel spreadsheet format has since reappeared on the website of a new USDOE entity, the Strategic Center for Natural Gas and Oil (SCNGO), - see following link: http://www.netl.doe.gov/scngo/Software/database.html#npc - CAUTION: examination of this dataset seems to indicate that it is an earlier version of the TORIS data containing no entries later than 1983. In May 2005, in order to help eliminate confusion and to ensure that a more current version of the Appalachian Basin data is again available to the public, a revision of the 1995 TORIS data was undertaken by Ronald R. McDowell, Senior Research Geologist, West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (WVGES). The intent was to revamp the format of the database to make it easily accessible by spreadsheet. The "card-image" format was replaced with the columnar style of an Excel spreadsheet. Explanatory column headings and explanation of units (where appropriate) were added for each set of of entries within the database. Numerically coded values specified by NPTO for use in the original database were all translated into their corresponding text equivalent. Finally, as a quality control check, the revised database was examined by Katharine Lee Avary, Head of the Oil and Gas Section, WVGES for obvious inaccuracies and inconsistencies; problematic entries were annotated or corrected when possible. NOTE: the revision of the TORIS database for the Appalachian Region was undertaken and completed without consultation with original authors and contributors from the various State Geological Surveys, except for those at the WVGES. As a result, Ronald McDowell and Katharine Avary take responsibility for any and all modifications to the database. However, as with the original TORIS data, no guarantee of accuracy or warantee of suitability, either express or implied, is made by the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey for the database. 5/23/2005 (See also the disclaimer on the bottom of the PTTC Oil and Gas page).
