INTRODUCTION
During my closing remarks as Eastern Section President in October of 1996 I disclosed
that one of my personal goals for my final year in office was to compile a fairly complete history
of the first 25 years of the Eastern Section. I also confessed that I had over committed myself
during that year, by serving as President and as General Co-Chairman for the 1996 Eastern
Section Technical meeting in Charleston, WV. As a result, I was only able to compile a list of
annual meetings dates, sites, themes and general chairs; Eastern Section presidents; and a partial
list of Levorsen Award winners, other presentation awardees, and professional performance
awardees. In closing, however, I made a pledge to continue this endeavor, and produce a more
finished product prior to our Golden Anniversary meeting.
What follows is my latest version of this project. I offer it now in an attempt to stimulate
interest in our section; in our history and in our future. Hopefully, this interest will encourage
more of you to become involved in the section, as officers and as volunteers to plan and develop
our annual meetings, complete with workshops and field trips. Also, it may serve as a useful
reference for those of you who are interested in making nominations for Eastern Section awards.
At the national level, our section commonly receives high praise for the way in which we honor
those who have served our association. To maintain this process, however, our hard-working,
three-person Awards Committee could use some help from you, the members of the Eastern
Section.
I have organized the following material in four parts: those who have served our section
in a variety of ways; those who have received professional performance awards; those who have
received excellence in presentation awards; and those who have presented papers and posters at
our technical sessions. All lists are alphabetic by person, not by office, award, presentation title
or year. This will provide an easier cross check from one list to another, and make it easier for
you to find mistakes I have made concerning your own efforts. Please refer these to me.
The main sources available to me for this compilation are the Program and Abstracts
booklets and Awards booklets printed for each meeting. Fortunately, I have a complete set of
Program and Abstracts, but not all of the Awards booklets. These main sources of information
have been supplemented with letterhead from the various years, which list officers, councilors
and committee chairs, and an earlier history of the Eastern Section compiled in the late 1970s.
THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED
My original intent was to document who had served as an Eastern Section officer,
committee chair or member, general chair of a meeting, and maybe some of the key meeting
chairs. Soon, however, it became obvious that so many had served in so many ways, that I listed
everyone who was listed in the Program and Abstracts booklets. While doing this, it became
necessary to differentiate between Eastern Section officers and committee chairs and Eastern
Section meeting committee chairs, because of similar titles being used. Therefore, I designated
Eastern Section officers and committees with "ES" and further designated the Eastern Section
Executive Committee members in bold. I also indicated in bold those key individuals who
organized the Eastern Section nearly 30 years ago and made it a growing concern. We owe these
people a great deal and their contribution should be printed in bold type. The year listed is the
year of the technical meeting, or the year the person completed that term of office.
At first I used the "job title" as printed in the source material. Thus, a person might be a
Session Chairman or a Session Presider, or a Chairman, Chairperson, or Chairwoman. Eventually
anyone who presided over a technical session became a Session Presider and anyone who chaired
a committee became a Chair.
I believe that I have listed all of the ES officers, General Chairs of meetings, and most of
the key chairs for the meetings from 1972 to 1998. However, I am sure that I may have missed
some workshop or field trip leaders that were not mentioned in my source material, and many
who have served as oral and poster judges at the various meetings. For this, I apologize, but I do
have another 23 years to make good on my pledge.
THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN HONORED
In 1975 the Eastern Section Executive Committee awarded John T. Galey, one of our
Founding Fathers and our first President, with a Distinguished Service Award for service to the
Eastern Section. Five years later, George V. Cohee was awarded our second Distinguished
Service Award. Since 1982, at least one person has received a Distinguished Service Award
each year. Also in 1982, our section began to grant Honorary Membership for members who
have distinguished themselves through service to the section and devotion to the science and
profession of geology. In 1985 we added the George V. Cohee Public Service Award, in
recognition of distinguished service and achievement in public affairs, and the following year our
Outstanding Educator Award, to recognize outstanding contributions to the education and
training of geologists. In 1987 we began awarding Certificates of Merit to key individuals to
recognize either singular contributions or their efforts in planning our annual technical meetings.
As the three AAPG divisions became stronger in our section, the divisions added their own
awards. The Gordon H. Wood, Jr. Memorial Award was created in 1989 to recognize
outstanding contributions to the geology of coal and other energy minerals, and the goals of the
Energy Minerals Division in the section. The Division of Environmental Geology added their
Meritorious Contributions Award in 1993 to recognize contributions to environmental geology
and the goals of the DEG in the section. In 1993 our Executive Committee voted to establish and
grant our first John T. Galey Award, the highest honor we bestow, to recognize outstanding
accomplishments and contributions to our profession and work directed toward the betterment of
society as a whole. And finally, in 1998 we officially established the Presidential Award in
recognition of outstanding achievement not covered by other awards.
Not all of our Program and Abstracts booklets list our annual awardees, because printing
deadlines preceded award selection in some years. Therefore, my incomplete set of Awards
Booklets became more important. Again, if I have missed someone, please tell me.
There may be a problem with the Certificate of Merit awards. It was not always obvious
if a person was receiving a certificate from the Eastern Section or from the national President.
THOSE WHO HAVE EXCELLED
Our section has granted an A.I. Levorsen Award for the best oral presentation at each of
our section meetings. This is actually a national award, as Levorsen Awards are given at each of
the six section meetings. The Vincent E. Nelson Memorial Award, established in 1988, is given
each year to recognize the best poster presented at our meeting. Beginning this year, this award
also will be elevated to national stature, although each of the six sections will retain their own
names for the award. Over the years we have established new awards to recognize the best
student paper, the Margaret Hawn Mirabile Memorial Award (1986); the best coal geology paper
given in an EMD session, the Ralph L. Miller Memorial Award (1990); and the best paper given
in an environmental geology session, the DEG Best Paper Award (1993). In addition, we created
the EMD Best Poster Award in 1990 and the DEG Best Poster Award in 1993.
Again, it was not common for our early Program and Abstracts booklets to mention the
individuals who have won these awards. I have included what I found, and have added co-authors as well, with the awardee, not as a separate listing. Although I found all of the Levorsen
awardees (there seems to be something about a name that starts with "S"), a more thorough
search of the archives, or input from our membership will be necessary to complete this portion
of the Who's Who. Again, if you know of someone who has received one of these awards who is
not listed, please send the information to me.
THOSE WHO HAVE MADE OUR TECHNICAL MEETINGS POSSIBLE
You can have the best committee chairs and structure possible, but if no one offers to
present papers and posters you won't have a meeting. We have been fortunate over the years to
attract high quality speakers and poster presenters to our meetings, and many of their
presentations have been timely, indeed. As I mentioned in my 1996 address, Sigmund Snelson's
Levorsen Award winning paper in 1972 that ended the thin- vs thick-skinned controversy set the
tone for meetings and presentations that followed.
Again, I offer an alphabetic list by senior author, and give the paper title and year
presented. Posters are noted; hopefully, I have caught all of these, but there may be a few poster
titles that are not designated as such. In addition to the senior authors, I have tried to give credit
to all other authors, by listing them and their senior author and year. I realize that where the
same or nearly the same combination of authors gave more than one paper or poster in the same
year it is confusing.
As I write this, I still have a dozen years to go with this final list, but I have received
some mild pressure to release what I have now and complete it later. Some of this immediacy
has resulted from the creation of our official Eastern Section web site, which is an appropriate
place to recognize those who have made our section the success it is today.
